The Beat: US Sailing’s New(ish) “TV” Series

US Sailing is all excited about their new video series called “The Beat.” It’s fun and the host, Katy Nastro is entertaining and has a nice way of making you want to keep watching. There is a large focus on the junior sailing element so far (they are on episode 6 now) and that’s the way it should be for a governing sport body wanting to grow the sport. Start with the kids!

This 5th episode is particularly fun since they head to the amazingly salty and killer island of Martha’s Vineyard, AND they hop on our favorite ride, an O’Pen Bic. In fact, it’s a great look at exactly what the Bics are about and why we have been spouting on about them all spring and summer long – they embrace the FUN factor and focus on the joys of capsizing, doing some crazy freestyle moves and they introduce us to the King of the O’Pen Bic movement, Nevin Sayre.

Nevin has been spreading his stoke about the boats and encouraging an increase in the fun factor of sailing since the boats came on the market. The fleets around the country are growing quickly – so see if you can grab a boat and a few friends who drooled all over yours (or our demos) and start a fleet.

Katy tries her hand at kiteboarding and takes us to the very successful sailing program, Sail Martha’s Vineyard and their “Seahab” program – Reachers. It’s a fun place to sail to, and now I want to move there and enroll in the sailing program. (They also have great beaches, a killer hockey! rink and program and of course it’s beautiful 12 months of the year – albeit ccccold on occasion.)

So check out this episode of The Beat and let us know what you think. Ready for another episode? Check out #6 here!
