This Saturday: Schooner Races on Martha’s Vineyard

If you’re heading the to Vineyard this weekend for a perfect almost-fall getaway, you’ll be treated to an awesome sight as our beloved customers, Gannon & Benjamin, host the 28th Annual Pat West Gaff Rig and Schooner Race on Saturday, September 16.

All Gaff Rig boats and schooners are welcome to enter. The race is held each year in memory of Francis (Pat) West Jr, and benefits the non-profit organization, Sail Martha’s Vineyard.

You can even register to race in this Vineyard classic, aboard the 122′ Gloucester Dory Fishing Schooner Adventure!

The race this coming Saturday starts at 11:00am with the best vantage point for viewing the lineup of lovely gaff’rs entered at the starting line just off of East Chop.

The 2015 winner in the gaff schooner class, and line honours recipient, was the Mystic Seaport schooner, “Brilliant” helmed by Captain Nicholas Alley, and First Mate Christopher Jander. First over the line Gaff Boat class winner went to islander, Captain Bill Bennett of “Wilbur”. Who will win this year? Plan on seeing more than a few G&B boats entered including, Juno, Charlotte, Lisca, Wonder, Hazel, and hopefully a few Bella’s! It will be quite a sight!

“Adventure” will arrive in Vineyard Haven on Thursday, and will be docked at the Tisbury Wharf through Sunday.  Visit their website for their island schedule of events: , including ticket purchase information for racing aboard “Adventure”, and a talk given on Friday morning by Matthew Stackpole, who will lecture on the restorations of “Adventure” and “Ernestina”.

This annual race benefits the island non-profit program, Sail Martha’s Vineyard.
