Volvo Ocean Race Press Conference TODAY

Maybe you’re not local – in which case – watch this space and our Facebook and Instagram pages for the big reveal of Sail Newport and the Volvo Ocean Race’s big news. We will share the announcement as we get word at the press conference. Our best guess is that a local team will be announced as the 4th boat to enter the race, and our hopes are set on seeing our own local hero, Charlie Enright, skipper of Alvimedica in the last VOR, involved with a Rhody based team. Stand by – or head over to Bel Mer on Goat Island for the big news break. Newport has already been announced as a stopover in the next race due largely to the major enthusiasm the area showed for the race and the participants. Adding a local team to the mix would be a major boon for Rhode Island and for the sailing industry.

It’s fair to say that Enright’s last team, heralded for being the youngest of all the entries, will have aged and that this latest hopeful team will be more focused on the environment and the trash Charlie and team spoke about seeing along the race route. Enright was outspoken about the amount of plastic and flotsam they passed on their route around the world.

The public is invited to attend for announcement and pep rally on Tuesday, March 21 starting at 10:00 a.m.   The major announcement will feature speakers from the Volvo Ocean Race and Sail Newport. The press conference will be held at Belle Mer, 2 Goat Island, Newport, RI, USA. The public is invited to attend as space permits and coffee will be served starting at 9:30 a.m. at Belle Mer.

“We’re encouraging sailing fans to come and help us show Newport’s excitement about the Volvo Ocean Race coming back to Rhode Island,” says Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport.

Also, Sail Newport will host a reception to celebrate the announcement at the Clarke Cooke House, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.  Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and cash bar will be available.

The Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover in 2015 was a huge success as over 130,000 people attended and enjoyed the racing, entertainment and hospitality of the public shore side festival. The Race starts October 22, 2017 from Alicante, Spain and will make its only North American stop in Newport, RI, May 8-20, 2018.
