In just 27 days, sailors in the Volvo Ocean Race will set off on their around the globe journey. October 22nd marks their departure from Lisbon, Portugal when 7 teams from around the world will compete in this crazy 9 month race. And we can’t wait. Our TotalBoat Ambassadors, Charlie Enright and Nick Dana are on our favorite boat, Team Vestas 11th Hour Racing, and our bets are on them and their top notch team to pull out some impressive sailing and an eventual win at the end.
With 11 legs and 13 stopover cities, one of which is right here in Newport, RI, we can’t wait to follow the teams around the seven seas as they struggle, soar and sail their way to Narragansett Bay in early May of 2018. They will set off again to cross the Atlantic Ocean bound for Cardiff, France on May 20th. So, mark these dates on your calendar and take a field trip to check out the boats, the sailors and the impressive VOR Village that will be built on Newport’s Fort Adams.
The race management has continued to refine rules, boat configuration and crew requirements which promise to make this even more exciting than before. The Boatyard, VOR’s own boat shop in every stopover, is offering more of their boat maintenance and repair story than before (we LOVE boat repair!!!) and we will highlight much of those stories as well. Because keeping the boat together is just one of the most important keys to winning this race.
Follow us here on TotalBoatShow for race reports and updates throughout this grueling ocean race. We’re psyched! Are you?
