We spent some time Friday and over the weekend checking out the new products, boats and industry friends at the Newport International Boat Show (NIBS). And even though it’s over until September 2018, we have a little report on the coolest things we saw at the show.
So this wrap up includes some items we wish we could have “wrapped up” and taken home from the boat show. Even though the show is over, it’s not too late to check out many of these goods either online, or at one of the impending boat shows along the east coast, Norwalk and Annapolis. Continue reading

First Ever Customer Boat Display at JD Tent Sale
Next Saturday’s JD Tent Sale is always a big hit with the local and sort-of local customers. Why not road trip on a spring Saturday to come check out the deals and offers and to take in some of our special seaside town, here in Bristol, RI. The Tent Sale IS a great excuse to visit the JD and TotalBoat HQ, and this year even moreso because we will have Louis Sauzedde from the TotalBoat Work Skiff video series here. Everyone seems to want to meet Louis, but we suspect they want to check out his amazing skiff and with that in mind, we got to thinking that there are other customers doing amazing boat building. And most likely, customers like you want to see those projects, too. Continue reading
If you’re heading to the Newport International Boat Show this weekend, you’re welcome. Here is a great hit list of 12 very cool displays on land and in-the-water to check out while you’re there. If you weren’t planning on heading down on this perfect last summer weekend – rethink your plans. It’s going to be a great day to wander the show and check out some amazing boats – both wooden and fiberglass, power and sail.
But as promised, here is a quick list of some great exhibits that caught our eye and camera. A curated collection of things that seem to matter “nautically,” are super cool or educational and are of interest to die-hard boaters (or wanna-be die-hards) is a valuable way to take a 4 hour tour of the show and get it done in half the time. Follow along on this little tour of what we thought was pretty rad. Continue reading

The JD/ TotalBoat team had a great experience at this past weekend’s Wooden Boat Show in Mystic, CT. Many of our customers would say the same, as a handful won some of the most prestigious awards handed out at the annual show. Congrats to LMI and East Passage Boatwrights for their work on Santana which was entered in the Concours d’Elegance and won Best in Show in the Sailboat Professionally Maintained category. Arey’s Pond Boat Yard Won the Concours d’Elegance for Best in Show in the Sailboat Professionally Maintained category (maintained by Arey’s Pond Boat Yard of course). And MP & G won with their amazing Buzzard’s Bay restoration of Mink, complete with period (1914!) pieces like a PFD, horns and anchor, sails and even hemp rope! Continue reading
Maybe you thought you would be skiing this coming weekend…but look outside – if you live anywhere near New England, you might have noticed that it appears to be more like a boating day (and week) than a winter ski week. So take that springtime energy and head over to the Providence Boat Show at the RI Convention Center. There are some very cool new boats, Paddle Boards, fishing gear and tackle and lots more to see there. Plenty of awesome vendors are packed up and moving in over the next few days and of even more interest – is the super cool “Youth Boat Build” sponsored by Jamestown Distributors.
The Youth Boat Build is a great example of how the marine industry is reaching to the youth and tomorrow’s workforce to create interest in the marine trades. Youth from the Ocean State are turning their passion for boats and building into high-tech, high-paying career paths in engineering, design, advanced composites manufacturing and the other marine trades. Marine Trade students from programs at Chariho Career & Technical Center and Warwick Area Career & Technical Center will be doing a Live boat-build during the show near the front entry lobby. In addition, you can meet with staff from the New England Institute of Technology and from the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) School of technology and Trades. Both provide top notch marine instruction and a career path that is well grounded in Rhody and the surrounding New England community.
You can pick up tickets and more show info at their website here, and when you get to the show, look for the TotalBoat banner and the boat under construction and tell them TotalBoat Show sent you!
This video is from a few years ago, but it showcases the wooden passion exhibited at the annual Wooden Boat Show at Mystic Seaport. This weekend, (June 26-28 from 9-5p daily) the 24th iteration of this popular wooden boat event will take place and our good friend, TotalBoat Ambassador, Richard Honan (featured in recent TotalBoat Show blogs) will be on hand to show his latest craft, his Adirondack Guide Boat. He will be defending his 2014 title for winner of the “I Built it Myself,” Contest. Stop by and wish Richard well and tell him TotalBoat Show sent you!
Other fun events include a Concours d’Elegance, including Judges’ Choice, Innovation, and People’s Choice awards; and skua races, demonstrations, boatbuilding and woodworking supplier booths (Sorry, No JD booth this year) and much more.
