Providing that New Age Fun Alternative
You know we love the O’pen Bic and all it’s fast and fun glory for junior sailors. We love it so much that we have sponsored 2 TotalBoat O’pen Bic Summer Tours (2015 and 2016), traveling around Southern New England, offering junior sailing programs a few days of free Bic sailing and fun. We even hosted our own TotalBoat O’pen Bic Intergalactic Regatta twice! We continue to come across numerous articles and blogs discussing how kids are shifting towards this faster, more fun sailboat and it’s partner: the racing format of the UnRegatta. In fact, many of the clubs we visited over the past 2 years have taken the plunge and are offering O’pen Bic youth sailing classes to compliment the Optimists and their other Jr. sailing offerings. Here is another example of how the O’pen Bic really is gaining traction around the world and North America. Thanks to Scuttlebutt for the article! Read on! Continue reading

15-foot wooden tender, in three separate pieces, sitting on a seaweed-covered launch ramp. That’s how George and Lindsey Hill started their morning one day last October, preparing for their favorite regatta of the year. The couple bolted their home-built nesting dinghy together as kids skipped rocks across Massachusetts’ Westport River. Forty-eight other craft, all equally as unique as the Hills’ classy, varnished pulling boat with its lug rig, began to appear on the sandy riverbank. This was the Hills’ seventh time at the Archipelago Rally, held annually across Rhode Island and last fall in Massachusetts. For those in southern New England who love just messing about in boats, this late-season event induces giddiness. Continue reading

Two articles I recently read made a lot of sense to me as a parent to two junior sailors and after a summer of trading back and forth between Optimists and O’pen Bics. The predicted happened, which was that my eleven year old preferred the planing, no-bailing, super fun unRegatta set up of the O’pen Bic to his race Opti. That is to say – we forked over decent money for a used race Opti and he spent the summer wanting to race O’pen Bics. It’s a movement not unique to my sailors, as kids experience the thrill of singlehanding a fast, fun boat – casting aside the ill conceived notion that any serious racing sailors must begin, and perfect, Opti racing. When you get 50 kids in one spot on a hot summer day, you better have a great plan to keep them busy and smiling (50 whiners is not pretty…). One sure way, we have found, is to send them out on a fleet of O’pen Bics with a partner and make them do crazy things while under sail. It seems this technique keeps the junior sailors occupied with thoughts about how to best hot-shot the fleet and come up with the coolest trick or the best technique for some challenging “UnRegatta” sailing. TOMORROW – Thursday July 21 is the Providence Community Boating Renaissance Regatta. Please come! It is a fun event with lots of cool boats to check out and maybe even take a ride on one!
Junior Regatta for the Sailors

A high performance catamaran – M32 will be on hand for Demos and boat rides
Jamestown Distributors will be offering up (loaning out) 4 O’Pen BICs to be used in yacht club Junior Programs in RI for 2 days this summer (2 days for each participating YC). The goal is to get more kids sailing O’Pen BICs and trying a new boat and a new way to experience jr sailing.
How it works:
- Sign Up! Contact Mike Mills at Jamestown Distributors firstname.lastname@example.org
- Request a week this summer when you want the O’Pen BIC summer tour to stop at your yacht club.
- Alden Haverly, a Jamestown Distributors employee, will deliver the BICs to your yacht club.
- Alden will work with one of your instructors on rigging, and sailing.
- After 2 days of sailing, Alden / JD will return, check off the boats, pack the boats up and take them to the next yacht club.
- O’Pen BICs need to be used in conjunction with sailing programs while they have them.
- A representative of your yacht club Jr program needs to meet Alden, receive the boats, sign off on the checklist and waiver, get trained on rigging and sailing, and take responsibility for the fleet for 2 days.
- Sailors must respect the boats and their fellow sailors
- Boats need to be returned in the same condition as they were loaned.
Don’t Forget!: Tiverton Yacht Club is hosting the RI O’Pen BIC Intergalactic State Championships. Sailors from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and RI are invited to sail in this A/B fleet O’pen Bic Regatta on July 30. This event will be run “Un-Regatta” style.
O’Pen Bics can also be purchased at Jamestown Distributors (Click here). Add one to your fleet for fast familiy fun and some sweet racing, too!
