O’pen Bics: New Age Fun Alternative

Providing that New Age Fun Alternative

You know we love the O’pen Bic and all it’s fast and fun glory for junior sailors. We love it so much that we have sponsored 2 TotalBoat O’pen Bic Summer Tours (2015 and 2016), traveling around Southern New England, offering junior sailing programs a few days of free Bic sailing and fun.  We even hosted our own TotalBoat O’pen Bic Intergalactic Regatta twice! We continue to come across numerous articles and blogs discussing how kids are shifting towards this faster, more fun sailboat and it’s partner: the racing format of the UnRegatta. In fact, many of the clubs we visited over the past 2 years have taken the plunge and are offering O’pen Bic youth sailing classes to compliment the Optimists and their other Jr. sailing offerings. Here is another example of how the O’pen Bic really is gaining traction around the world and North America. Thanks to Scuttlebutt for the article! Read on!  Continue reading

Junior Sailing Is Embracing O’pen Bics

Two articles I recently read made a lot of sense to me as a parent to two junior sailors and after a summer of trading back and forth between Optimists and O’pen Bics. The predicted happened, which was that my eleven year old preferred the planing, no-bailing, super fun unRegatta set up of the O’pen Bic to his race Opti. That is to say – we forked over decent money for a used race Opti and he spent the summer wanting to race O’pen Bics. It’s a movement not unique to my sailors, as kids experience the thrill of singlehanding a fast, fun boat – casting aside the ill conceived notion that any serious racing sailors must begin, and perfect, Opti racing.  Continue reading

Intergalactic FUN for O’pen Bic Junior Sailors

Screenshot 2016-08-09 15.35.24

When you get 50 kids in one spot on a hot summer day, you better have a great plan to keep them busy and smiling (50 whiners is not pretty…). One sure way, we have found, is to send them out on a fleet of O’pen Bics with a partner and make them do crazy things while under sail. It seems this technique keeps the junior sailors occupied with thoughts about how to best hot-shot the fleet and come up with the coolest trick or the best technique for some challenging “UnRegatta” sailing. Intergalactic Success for the O’pen Bic Regatta

IMG_1862The 2nd O’pen Bic Intergalactic Regatta took place Thursday and can be officially deemed another big success for all involved.  Kids were laughing and high-fiving. Boats were planing and capsizing. Parents were cheering and applauding. The weather was sunny and the wind was fresh. Conditions on Blue Bill Cove were a 10, with about 15-18 knots of wind by the time we started the final races. And some kids felt nervous about racing in the building breeze, so the Race Committee announced that the 2-man teams should sail together for more fun and less stress.  And this was an UNRegatta – so fun was the priority and scoring – oh yeah – no scoring. Just full fledged fun on the race course. Continue reading

The O’pen Bic Intergalactic [Super Fun] Regatta: Next Thursday, July 28th!

It’s only a little more than a week away!  (Next Thursday the 28th is coming fast!) Have you registered? Last year was such a blast for kids and parents as friends and teammates shredded a fun course that involved squirt guns, capsizes,  a stand-up race, and the always amusing beach starts. (check out the video from last year above)

Send your sailor for a regatta experience unlike most others, as we remove the stress and crank the fun factor. Kids won’t want to race or even sail if it’s stressful and anxiety inducing. And many kids find this to be the case with crowded starting lines, confusing mark roundings and panicky capsizes and rightings… The O’pen Bics are fast and fun and the Intergalactic UnRegatta is the ultimate celebration of sailing with a friend, enjoying your competition and sailing fast on a boat that wants to GO! O’Pen Bic Sailboats – Summer Tour 2016

Jamestown Distributors and the TotalBoat squad had a BLAST last summer touring Southern New England, spreading the stoke for the super fun O’pen Bic sailboat. Again for summer 2016, JD and TotalBoat will be loaning out the O’pen Bic Road Show –  4 O’Pen BICs to be used in yacht club Junior Programs in RI or nearby CT/ MA for 2 days this summer (2 days for each participating YC).

The goal is to get more kids sailing O’Pen BICs, trying out a new boat and checking out a new way to experience junior sailing. It’s not all Optis and prams! You can rig easily, go way faster, and best of all – right yourself in seconds and have fun doing it!  YES! O’pen Bics actually make flipping your boat fun. Because righting it is no. big. deal. Kids who sailed both last summer made huge gains in Opti racing, and we think it’s because the boat handling skills gained with a boat like the Bic made more confident, skilled sailors in all conditions.

How it works:

  1. Sign Up!  Contact Mike Mills at Jamestown Distributors mmills@jamestowndistributors.com
  2. Request a week this summer when you want the O’Pen BIC summer tour to stop at your yacht club.
  3. A Jamestown Distributors employee will deliver the BICs to your yacht club.
  4. We will work with one of your instructors on rigging, and sailing.
  5. After 2 days of sailing, JD will return, check off the boats, pack the boats up and take them to the next yacht club.

Requirements:

  • O’Pen BICs need to be used in conjunction with sailing programs while they have them.
  • A representative of your yacht club Jr. program needs to meet with us, receive the boats, sign off on the checklist and waiver, get trained on rigging and sailing, and take responsibility for the fleet for 2 days.
  • Sailors must respect the boats and their fellow sailors
  • Boats need to be returned in the same condition as they were loaned!

What better way to show kids other boats, different boat handling and tons of FUN! Sign up or get in touch today to check out the boat, the fleet and to experience the fun!

AND Don’t Forget!:  Tiverton Yacht Club is hosting the 2nd Annual RI O’Pen BIC Intergalactic Championships.  Sailors from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and RI are invited to sail in this A/B fleet O’pen Bic Regatta on July 28.   This event will be run “Un-Regatta” style, the best way to be! Check out the video below to to see how much fun it was last year!

O’Pen Bics can also be purchased at Jamestown Distributors (Click here). Add one to your fleet for fast familiy fun and some sweet racing, too!

TotalBoat Team @ the O’Pen Bic North Americans

Kids from all over our American map flocked to Charleston last weekend for the O’Pen Bic North American UNRegatta. We know all about these cool regattas since we hosted one of our own last summer and plan to do so again this summer – read about it here). So we sent down some sailor spies to get the skinny and do some reconnaissance for us and their report: AWESOME FUN!

Watch this video and you will see right away that kids enjoy the sport and fun and not as much of the crazy stressful competition. That is not to say our TotalBoat reps who were sailing were not competitive – on the contrary….they represented Team TotalBoat and finished in the top of the fleet.

Check out the website from the event and then grab yourself or your kiddo an O’Pen Bic of their own (we sell lots of them!) and you will see the massive fleet growth that is taking place almost weekly, especially in the northeast where we are spreading the word and stoke via our Demo program which was an awesome success last summer.

Hop aboard and hold on tight!

O’Pen Bic Intergalactic Video and Boat Sale

TOO. MUCH. FUN! In the midst of storm prep or storm avoidance it’s fun to look back at this crazy event this past summer. Kids had smiles for days after the first ever O’pen Bic Intergalactic RI Championships. Big breeze and a big crowd of sailors brought wild conditions and enthusiasm to the shores near the Tiverton YC, host of this awesome Un-Regatta. See – it wasn’t about winning this time – everyone got awards and everyone had a blast racing with a teammate on some pretty nutty courses. And everyone swam. A bunch. Not the scary kinda capsize, but planned – even mandated – capsizing mid race to see who could best recover and scoot to the finish.

The O’pen Bics are showing up all over the East Coast and beyond. The West Coast has a number of fleets popping up and around here – especially post Intergalactic event – clubs and families are embracing this fun, fast and fairly wet kind of racing.

We took demo boats on the road this summer (read about the Bic Summer Tour here) to spread the stoke about how cool they are to sail. And the people loved the tour. Junior sailors flocked to the trailer of boats to check them out and be first in line to take it out. (Watch the video about the Summer Tour here)  Kids readily handed off the tiller of their Opti for a chance to rip around in the O’pen Bics! And our little fleet of Bics rocked it’s way around New England – steadily adding to the list of enthusiasts. And to the list of boat owners. So next year when Bic madness ensues – there will be a longer list of local clubs and sailors ready to Un-Regatta with the best of ’em!

And now is your chance! Pick up one of these gently used boats from the summer tour for a great price. The boat retails for over $3200 but you can grab one of these boats for $2400.  (fully rigged, lightly used, no dolly or covers.) Grab one now and tuck it away for the sweet spring sailing we all love. To inquire about the boats contact kristinb@jamestowndistributors.com or grab a brandy new boat here.

The Beat: US Sailing’s New(ish) “TV” Series

US Sailing is all excited about their new video series called “The Beat.” It’s fun and the host, Katy Nastro is entertaining and has a nice way of making you want to keep watching. There is a large focus on the junior sailing element so far (they are on episode 6 now) and that’s the way it should be for a governing sport body wanting to grow the sport. Start with the kids!

This 5th episode is particularly fun since they head to the amazingly salty and killer island of Martha’s Vineyard, AND they hop on our favorite ride, an O’Pen Bic. In fact, it’s a great look at exactly what the Bics are about and why we have been spouting on about them all spring and summer long – they embrace the FUN factor and focus on the joys of capsizing, doing some crazy freestyle moves and they introduce us to the King of the O’Pen Bic movement, Nevin Sayre.

Nevin has been spreading his stoke about the boats and encouraging an increase in the fun factor of sailing since the boats came on the market. The fleets around the country are growing quickly – so see if you can grab a boat and a few friends who drooled all over yours (or our demos) and start a fleet.

Katy tries her hand at kiteboarding and takes us to the very successful sailing program, Sail Martha’s Vineyard and their “Seahab” program – Reachers. It’s a fun place to sail to, and now I want to move there and enroll in the sailing program. (They also have great beaches, a killer hockey! rink and program and of course it’s beautiful 12 months of the year – albeit ccccold on occasion.)

So check out this episode of The Beat and let us know what you think. Ready for another episode? Check out #6 here!
